Pied Pipers of Pakistan
By Komal Hashmi

To control a rat infestation in Hamelin, Germany, a man was contracted by the town’s people who proclaimed that he was capable of controlling the menace. This man mesmerized the rats by a magical tune he played with his pipe (or flute) and lured the hypnotized rats into a river where they drowned to death. This man came to be known as the pied piper of Hamelin.
Doesn’t the story sound familiar? Pakistan has the distinction of breeding a few pied pipers of her own. Be it in the mountains of NWFP or be it in the urban dwellings of Pakistan, these pied pipers mesmerize their followers and teach them how to earn paradise (Jannat) by killing their fellow Muslims, whom they label infidels (murtids or takfiris). These pied pipers entrance the youth of my country with their emotional sermons and twisted quranic interpretations, turning them against their own Muslim brothers by presenting contorted reality and half-truth to their respective audiences in order to achieve their desired goals. They use Islam to justify their bigotry and to misguide young naïve minds of Pakistan.
The basic rule for effective propaganda is establishment of authenticity by preaching or reporting the truth at first, and then mixing it with lies after credibility of the reporter has been established. This rule is followed by famous media channels like CNN and BBC who developed their credibility over many years by accurate and authentic reporting. But later, misused their good name to preach false propaganda. This doctrine is also practiced by the pied pipers of Pakistan, who win people’s hearts by their initial truth mongering, thus hypnotizing the masses with their magical tunes and later lure their followers to their own destruction. They feed them false intelligence and fabricated truth creating animosity between two groups of Muslims. But alas, their followers do not question their credibility anymore and blindly follow them parroting whatever they hear from their perceived saviors.
I want to know, what is this jihad against Muslims? Aren’t all Muslims destined to hell who murder their fellow Muslims? Or are all my former teachings of Islam null and void in current Pakistani political situation?Aren’t these men leading the ignorant public towards their own doom? We take pride in being Muslims, yet donot refer to Quran and Hadith for guidance, thus allowing our lack of religious knowledge be targetted by the people who mislead us in the name of Islam.Let Quran and Hadith be your guide intead of mesmeric sermons. Learn to sort truth from falsehood, even if they come from the same source. Read Quran and pray for guidance from Allah to discriminate between deception and reality. We need to question every information we acquire and review it in light of Islamic teachings. Reject all, that clashes with Quran and Hadith and form your own opinion about current political situation instead of parroting your mentors.
What I gather from the references I am about to quote from Quran and Hadith is that any Muslim who kills another, is destined to Hell, not to Heaven! There is no Jihad against your fellow Muslims! People who die fighting with their Muslim brothers are not Shaheeds!

Narrated Al-Ahnaf bin Qais:
While I was going to help this man (‘Ali Ibn Abi Talib), Abu Bakr met me and asked, “Where are you going?” I replied, “I am going to help that person.” He said, “Go back for I have heard Allah’s Apostle saying, ‘When two Muslims fight (meet) each other with their swords, both the murderer as well as the murdered will go to the Hell-fire.’ I said, ‘O Allah’s Apostle! It is all right for the murderer but what about the murdered one?’ Allah’s Apostle replied, “He surely had the intention to kill his companion.”
This is how Quran advices us to act, when two Muslims quarrel:
Surah-e-Hujrat.
49:9-11 Hence, if two groups of believers fall to fighting, make peace between them; but then, if one of the two [groups] goes on acting wrongfully towards the other, fight against the one that acts wrongfully until it reverts to God’s commandment; and if they revert, make peace between them with justice, and deal equitably [with them]: for verily, God loves those who act equitably!
All believers are but brethren. Hence, [whenever they are at odds,] make peace between your two brethren, and remain conscious of God, so that you might be graced with His mercy.
O YOU who have attained to faith! No men shall deride [other] men: it may well be that those [whom they deride] are better than themselves; and no women [shall deride other] women: it may well be that those [whom they deride] are better than themselves. And neither shall you defame one another, nor insult one another by [opprobrious] epithets: evil is all imputation of iniquity after [one has attained to] faith; and they who [become guilty thereof and] do not repent – it is they, they who are evildoers!
It is imperitive to mediate reconciliation between quarelling Muslim brethren. And it is critical to analyze who is on the right path before siding with any party. The goal is to direct misguided Muslims towards Allah’s commandment, and to side with “haq”, even when haq or truth goes against the people you support or have a soft corner in your heart for. One should be “just” and “un-biased” when resolving conflicts between two parties.
In current political scenario, the media commentators claim that TTP is backed by US/Israel/India nexus, while TTP claims that Pakistan army is being aided by US and thus working on their agenda. Both are killing each other and believe their actions are justified as the opponent has allied with forces of “kuffar”, the yahood-o-nasara(Christian and Jews) and is therefore “wajib-ul-qatl”. But who is right in their claim and who is benefiting from this situation? Maybe, both are right! US is fueling both sides and attempting to create a civil war within Pakistan. While we are busy in prooving each other to be “kafirs”, the real enemy, the true “kafirs”, are fast advancing with their goals and have nearly achieved their target. It is about time that we identified our true enemy and focussed our attention towards them. If they want to fight a covert war, lets do the same. Lets target our animosity against the black water merceneries who arrogantly roam our streets. Our army and intelligence agencies are well trained in covert operations, lets use their expertise in this field. The only way we can be united is by targetting our common enemy. This will also eliminate the cross labelling of “infidels” and will focus our joint effort against the “batil”!
We have to develop the intellect to realize the defects of our present strategy. Our enemies are benefitting from the Pakarmy and TTP battle, not Pakistan. We are losing Muslim lives on both sides and nobody is earning Jannat. Let us refer to Quran for guidance and not be mislead by people who use Islam as a tool to deceive. To combat such ploys, we have to be better versed in Islam. For that, dedicate some time each day for Quran, each small step takes us nearer to the goal. If we hold on to the rope of Allah, He will guide us through this mist of deception and enable us to see clearly.
Hazrat Ali said,
Submission to Allah’s Will is the best companion; wisdom is the noblest heritage; theoretical and practical knowledge are the best signs of distinction; deep thinking will present the clearest picture of every problem.

Nice write-up Komal
Nice article! Must Read!
In the December 18th New York Times publication, an article Pakistan Ministers Are Called Before the Courts was written by Jane Perlez and Salman Masood. Though the article does state the annulment of the National Reconciliation Ordinance and the repercussions of the decision taken by the Pakistan Supreme Court, it has given an image portraying the Pakistan Army as an anti-democratic institution. Understandably the Pakistan Army is going through a turbulent phase. The army is currently engaged in a battle against militants who are adamant in bringing down the current democratic set up in Pakistan. However, one must not forget that many of these militants have grown up in the same neighborhood as the army soldiers, and regardless of allegiance, it is always difficult to take up arms against a childhood acquaintance.
Thanks omer and thinking brain….AHR, you are right, many of the pakarmy officers resigned when they were initially informed about the army’s FATA operation in coalition with US’s “war on terror”… saying that one cannot win a war fighting with ones self…. the army morale was low and they did not want to fight US’s war in Pakistan against their own kith and kin……
it was at this time that a misinformation campaign against TTP was launched by ISI/army to potray for the pak army jawans, a demonized image of pakistan taliban, so that army jawans would percieved them as enemy and would fight against them…..
TTP leadership was originally, a part of afghan taliban…. when pakarmy joined hands with US for their “war on terror” and gave them their bases to launch attacks on afghan taliban, baitullah mehsud started declaring them “murtid” and “kafir” for siding with yahood-o-nasara against their muslim brothers….. mullah omar did not side with him…. so he formed a sub-jamaat, and resolved to fight pak-army and pak govt for their pro-US stance (against muslims of afghanistan)….. these men aren’t the demons they are potrayed to be,by the media (fueled by army propoganda)…they seem to be religious men fighting for a cause they deeply believe in….they are fighting a jihad against kuffar and their coalitions….
the TTP have accepted responsibility for bombings against army and police…but the bombings at markets and educational institutions were denied by them, they said their war was not with pakistani civilians but with their govt and army who have sold their sole to the kuffar and are treading on a forbidden path……needless to add, their are some other(foreign) elements who are trying to sabotage pakistan and pinning the blame on TTP…. we have to be wary of such forces(working independantly) instead of blindly saying that TTP is backed by them…..(as propogated by army/ISI via Zaid Hamid)
That is my opinion about the matter…Allah knows best
komal the taliban are not pied pipers as u portrayed them, they are pious muslims doing their religious duty of jihad, they never started the fight against pakistani army .it was our secular army who attacked these taliban first to please their god the america.
there is not even small doubt about this fact.if you do not want to believe it than do not.you will damage no one but yourself ,because allah hates the people who spread rumours against his mujahideen
you write that a muslim whould not kill others.than why pakistani army attacked taliban first?after taliban were attacked what could they do but to defend themselves ,or you are advising taliban to lay down on ground and get slaughtered to please paki generals so that these generals sons can buy ranches in usa
people like you are misguided and will pay heavily.and unfortunately it seems that you people wont repent and allahs azaab which is fast approaching will strike pakistan, and alas and alas we may loose everything
Assalamulaikum Kashif,
The intent of my article was to target the senseless patriots who blindly follow Zaid Hamid without verifying the information and propoganda he preaches…. i agree with you that pak army is perpetrator here, playing US game and serving their paymaster….. that being said, i donot think TTP are upto any good either…..
I feel ulema need to step and and conduct peace talks between TTP and army (instead of issuing fatwas to appease the army) so that we can concentrate on our true enemy, the US…..
This article is my point of view…it can be right or wrong…its not tha last word….i donot say that muslims should not kill muslims…quran and hadith say that…i have stated the verses for you to read……instead of contesting this, calling it my opinion….it is for u to open up the quran and understand its wisdom and pray that Allah guides u……. labelling me “misguided” will not do u any good…… Allah knows my “niyat” and i am answerable to only Him….. i donot need to appease the pakarmy or Pakistan taliban…when they r walking on the wrong path!
May Allah guide us all!
It seems bad that muslims kill muslims. It sure is ok for muslims to kill kafirs… and their uncles.
